By Craig Burgess
The Balsall Common Fun Run first appeared in the local calendar in 2014 as part of the Balsall Common Festival, as a result of an initial conversation I had with Lily Mae Foundation Chairman Ryan Jackson in the Summer of 2013.
At the time of the conversation, Ryan asked me why Balsall Common didn’t have a Fun Run. As I was involved in the Balsall Common Festival at the time, I kept the conversation in mind, knowing that the Lily Mae Foundation team possessed a talent for staging fundraising events, in the hope of creating a Fun Run in 2014.
When the New Year arrived, I approached Ryan in my role as Balsall Common Festival Chairman with a view to The Lily Mae Foundation staging a Fun Run as part of the event. He agreed to speak to the team and the rest – as they say – is history.
Balsall Common Fun Run
Since the inaugural Fun Run in 2014, The Lily Mae Foundation has coordinated an increasingly successful event that brings the community together every September. For the first two years, the Fun Run formed part of the Balsall Common Festival but now stands alone as a separate event in the local calendar.
In addition to all the runners who raised funds for their own causes – the 2016 event raised £10773.26 towards the work of The Lily Mae Foundation. The Balsall Common based charity supports parents and families who have suffered a stillbirth or neonatal death.
2018 Fun Run
The Fun Run will start and finish at The Heart of England School for a 5th successive year but is licensed for the first time in 2018 by UK Athletics.
Balsall Common Fun Run – Sunday 23rd September 2018
The 2018 Fun Run is organised by The Lily Mae Foundation in association with The University of Warwick, where their sports department has produced a series of educational videos for runners as part of their partnership.
Other major sponsors include Signarama (Birmingham South); Aquarius Interiors Ltd and NDS Tooling Solutions Ltd. Many other local businesses contribute services or finance to make the event possible each year.
Timing chip technology will be in use, facilitating the publication of reliable results information within two hours of the last runner completing the course.
