Leigh Perry is the Principal and Trustee of DMS – Heart of England Music Academy – the highly rated school of music and theatre based in Knowle.
With a piano teaching grandfather and organist mother, the musical genes meant Leigh was always destined for a life of music. She started playing the organ aged 10 and at 16, entered the Young Organist of The Year competition for Junior, which she won. This led her on a path into the Seniors Finals, which she also won, earning her live performances on Radio WM and at the BBC’s famous Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham.
This led to further opportunities to perform live nationwide, which she continued to do for 10 years.
A short while after her competition success as a 16-year-old, Leigh began working at Dorridge Music Centre, a retail music shop which also provided music lessons to a handful of customers.
One thing led to another and Leigh was eventually offered the opportunity to buy the business, which in turn led to her dropping retail to focus entirely on teaching.
Leigh renamed the business Dorridge Music School to reflect the switch in emphasis. More recent changes include a switch to Registered Charity status to make tuition accessible to more people, a relocation to nearby Knowle and further rebranding and new operating name DMS Heart of England Music Academy.
